Moving from Squarespace

13 December 2012

So I’ve decided to move this site from being hosted by Squarespace over to Github Pages. For a long while I’ve disliked the options that I had in styling the site with Squarespace, finding it far too confining. I held out because they were going to be releasing developer access to the platform. I figured I could have the best of both worlds - something hosted that I didn’t have to fight with, and something extensible that I could build from.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t exactly how that went. I don’t know how the servers are arranged at Squarespace, but it seems that they have multiple instances of their service that are completely walled off from one another. They have their platform 5 customers, platform 6 customers, and now they’ve added the new developer platform.

As of now, there is no way to move data from one of these instances to another. Although, oddly enough, if one were to want to move to Wordpress, they do offer an export for that.

Anyway, a great deal of my time is spent using text editors and Git anyway, so it seemed a Jekyll generated static site is the natural choice. The real upshot to this, is that I’m already familiar and using all the tools necessary to make this a pretty simple workflow.

Oh, and never fear, my next task will be stripping Bootstrap styles from this site.

Great Stuff From Godspeed! You Black Emperor

11 October 2012

Loved this interview with Godspeed You! Black Emperor about their upcoming album.

You can stream the full album here.

How does Godspeed operate as a community?

Your car breaks and you take it to the garage – dirty room, five mechanics maybe, car keys hung on nails next to the front counter. Two cars on lifts, one car in the corner, all the other cars parked in the back. Everything and everybody is covered in grease, everyone’s smoking like crazy. They have to fix 20 cars before 5pm, or else the backlog will fucking break everybody’s back until Christmas. The parts suppliers roll in every half-hour or so, mostly bringing new brake pads and flex-hoses, but bumpers sometimes, oil-pans, headlight assemblies or timing belts.

In a good garage, the whole mess of it almost collapses all day long. Dudes yell and argue, everything’s going wrong and why are we doing this anyways? The hose won’t fucking fit, or the screwdriver slips and you lose the hose-clamp somewhere beneath the undercarriage. The sun starts to set and the floor gets littered with burnt bulbs, spent gaskets, oil, and sweat, and brake fluid. Someone’s hungover, someone’s heartbroken, someone couldn’t sleep last night, someone feels unappreciated, but all that matters is making it through the pile, the labour is shared and there’s a perfect broken poetry to the hammering and yelling, the whine of the air compressor kicking to life every five minutes or so.

It all seems impossible. But somehow we make it through the pile. The cars run again. The cars drive away. Rough day but now it’s done, and everything’s fine; everything’s better than fine. Tomorrow we’ll do it all over again. You deal with the Volvo, I’ll deal with the Toyota. Heat and noise. All day, every day, until it’s quiet again. We fix cars until we die. We love fixing cars.

Adobe Strikes Again!

25 September 2012

The icon for Adobe Shadow wasn’t good. It also wasn’t horrible.

Clearly the answer to that is to give it a terrible name, and an icon that resembles wood paneling as rendered by an Atari.

Check out this post over at for some great 3D work by Tim Reynolds.

Time to update my desktop background, I think.

Another Kickstarter Fulfilled!

24 September 2012

Today I got my reward for backing Murder By Death’s Kickstarter. Scored a download of the new album, as well as this flashy vinyl.

Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon

Barely gave the album a full listen, and I’m already loving it. Currently thinking that “Straight at the Sun” is the standout track.

Official release date is 9/25, and you can preorder via iTunes here. The Kickstarter campaign is over, but if you want the vinyl, you can get that from the band’s merch store.

So We Meet Again Internet

14 September 2012

So I registered this domain a while ago with the intention of relaunching my blog. That got postponed as that kind of project inevitably does.

So I did the only rational thing, I’ve scaled back my initial plans on what this site would be, and will launch a small blog first. Provided this return goes well, we’ll see about expanding the operation.

Things to look forward to: Project updates (One of these in particular should be raising some eyebrows shortly.) Random coding information. Cat pictures. Any other commentary I deem fit to post.

For right now, I can really only fulfill on one of those.

Meet Harriet Stay tuned for the rest.
